Coverage[]

Westhampton Beach is primarily featured in Heavy Metal at 35 Years after people when the New York's rich and famous no longer provide an escape from the troubles of the city.

The show briefly explains the history of the village, where opulent homes were always perched precariously on the sea and on the barrier islands that separated the mainland from the pounding Atlantic surf were many houses that were built. In the 1990s, a series of Atlantic storms breached the barrier island in Westhampton destroying many homes and after the disaster came the US Army Corps of Engineers, whom rebuilt the barrier island and made sure it was constantly fortified by dredging sand from the sea to build up and reinforce the beach.

Lynn Bocamazo explains how the dredging work, it is similar to a vacuum cleaner head where it vacuums up the sand of the ocean bottom and pump the sand slurry pumped from the dredge onto the beach where it is reshaped by earth moving equipment. She then explains that without humans, tens of thousands of houses wouldbe damage and the low lying areas of Long Island would be flooded.

Westhampton Beach is one of the affected locales, and without the Army Corps to pump up to 1 million cubic yards of sand onto the beach every 4 years, the mansions of the rich and famous fall victims to the waves, thousands of houses damage, and floods including the barrier island.
