Pontederia crasipes, commonly known as common water hyacinth, is an aquatic plant native to the Amazon basin, and is often a highly problematic invasive species outside its native range. It is the sole species of Pontederia subg. Oshunae.[1]

Coverage[]

Water hyacinth is featured in The Invaders.

In 1 week after people, the show explains the rivers and lakes from Florida to Texas are dying before revealing that the invasive weeds from South America are the water hyacinth, a purple flower with a dark side. Betsy Von Holle explains that it sucks the oxygen out of the water preventing native species including fish to survive & thrive and could double its population in one to two weeks. Without people to control its spread, water hyacinth won the battle by forfeit.
