The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a steel through arch bridge in Sydney, spanning Sydney Harbour from the central business district to the North Shore. The view of the bridge, the harbour, and the nearby Sydney Opera House is widely regarded as an iconic image of Sydney, and of Australia itself. Nicknamed "The Coathanger" because of its arch-based design, the bridge carries rail, vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic.[1]

Coverage[]

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is featured briefly in the Australian dub of the documentary as a cameo, Decaying and featured again in Waves of Devastation.

It was introduced in 4 years after people when trouble is brewing for the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The episode explains that it is nicknamed the Coathanger by locals and is one of the tallest steel arch bridges in the world made with the special ability to expand and contract. The bridge towers 430 feet above the harbour water but in Australia's extreme heat, the steel arch expands to grow a foot taller during the day and shrinking back to size at night. After 4 years in the strong sun and salty air of Sydney Harbour, signs of corrosion are everywhere and corrosion in one particular area could doom the bridge. It has hinges to allow the bridge to grow taller and are at each end of the massive single arch, but corrosion soon cause the hinges to lock together. It concludes the segment by asking that what will happen if the bridge loses the ability to expand & contract.

The aftermath of the collapse.

Its fate is then revealed in 100 years after people when within sight of where the majestic Sydney Opera House once stood, the bridge is nearing it's own end. The aging steel of the bridge is under tremendous stress and the hingers at each end of the arch once allowed the bridge to expand during the hot Australian days have became corroded and locked long ago. The pressure and severe corrosion finally cause a cascade of crumbling supports for the deck to crack and the bridge collapses into the harbor.

Trivia[]

  • the collapse sequence looks stale and the rest of the bridge didn't react or cascade to its collapse, instead each end of the bridge is left dangling while the center section crumbles into the river.
  • The Sydney Opera House is seen in the background, despite that it sunk 25 years earlier.
