Rats are various medium-sized, long-tailed rodents. Species of rats are found throughout the order Rodentia, but stereotypical rats are found in the genus Rattus. [1] The most familiar species of rat, as well as one of the most economically important species, is the brown rat, Rattus norvegicus, which occurs in the wild, as a pest in human environments, and was also domesticated by humans as pets and as laboratory animals.
Coverage[]
Rats are generally featured in the documentary, while also featured in multiple locations with varying locations on Sin City Meltdown, Crypt of Civilization, and The Last Supper.
Documentary[]
In 10 days after people, rats would slowly begin to notice the absence of people along with house mice and while it seem able to be exist without people, are surprisingly quite dependent on the food supplies. John Hadidian stated that rats and mice are usually termed commensal rodents, meaning sharing the table and very dependent on people. He then gave examples like little house mouse and Norway rat where it will do less well in the absence of people.
In the initial weeks after people are gone, rats will raid pantries in home and grocery shelves in stores. After eating all the food supplies, rats will be able to survive on things considered inedible by humans, such as glue, cloth and cardboard. Ray Coppinger stated that if a city was abandoned, the rats would go back to earning an honest living by go back to the wild and compete for resources. Eventually the rodents would abandon homes and buildings, making it easy pickings for predators. Although rats and mice will be able to survive well enough without humanity's food, their populations would be reduced.
Sin City Meltdown[]
In 2 days after people, a rat pack is prowling into the streets along the Las Vegas Strip as power started to fail. The show gave information that rats have been a problem in neighborhoods around Las Vegas since the 1990s and experts believe that rats came in palm trees, shipped in to beautify hotels and housing developments. After people, the rats find their way into the casinos where they're more interested in searching for food than rolling the dice.
However in 2 weeks after people, the rat pack of Las Vegas has plenty to fear because a Rat Terrier - a breed of dog which was bred specifically to hunt rats - has come to town. Relying on its training, the terrier is able to exterminate the rats of Las Vegas.
Crypt of Civilization[]
In 1 week after people, rats have taken over the cargo ship, carrying 30 thousand tons of wheat, on the high seas. The show gave information that ship crews battled rats with traps and poisons in the time of humans, however the days are over after people disappeared. A large rat of 12 or 13 ounces can eat 15% of it's body weight in a day and while it eat, it'll also breed with female rats can have 6 litters in a year with dozen rats in each litter. When the age of the rat reaches only 3 months, the young rats are ready to breed.
In 1 year after people, the rats on the cargo ship have experienced a population explosion because a pair of rats can produce 2,000 offspring in just 12 months and the dark hold of the ship has become a moving wave of hungry breeding rodents. The rat's need for half an ounce of water a day has been satisfied by rainwater but without people to work the bilge pumps, the cargo ship is taking on water in the middle of the ocean. Because of it, seawater saturates the grain and thousands of rats flee to the upper decks where they can't desert.
In 2 years after people, the rats would turned on each other after the seawater saturates their only food supply and 2 years after, every rat died of starvation or cannibalism and the bodies became food for the hungry seabirds.
The Last Supper[]
It was minorly introduced in 1 week after people as the food of the grocery stores start to decay, the pungent odor send out a welcome call to the world of rodents like rats. The show gave information that rats have better sense of smell than dogs and in 2006, experts began to use rats to sniff out landmines in war-torn parts of Africa. After people, the rats muzzle their way into supermarkets and feast their eyes and noses on a 100-course meal left behind by man.
