if people on earth vanished one cause could be a meteor strike, a wicked hellish event. 65 million years ago it's believed a meteor strike led to the extinction of the dinosaurs, and just about everything else on the planet. a meteor strike today, similar in size to the one that killed the dinosaurs, would have the same cataclysmic results, this time though, humans would be the victims. it will take a meteor 6 miles wide to wipe out all life on the planet. the impact of such a strike would cause an earthquake estimated to be 13 in the Richter scale. volcanoes would erupt, lava would flow like water, plumes of volcanic ash would set off lightning in the sky. wildfires would ignite, entire forests, would burst into flames, smoke from these fires would mix with massive amounts of dust generated by the impact. the Sun would be completely blocked out, plunging the earth into total darkness, a global winter would envelop the earth. and don't think we be safe with the meteor slammed into the oceans instead of land, the blast would cause a tsunami, the likes of which the world has never seen, two miles high. the good news is this type of cataclysmic meteor occurs only once every 100 million years, the bad news is that smaller meteors, but large enough to wipe out major cities, fall from the sky, and more frequently, about once every 1000 years.

Trivia[]
- During the meteor's flight over the Brooklyn Bridge and New York City en route to the Empire State Building, the meteor is shown having no effect on the structures below its flight path, despite the fact that at the altitude it was travelling at, its shockwave should have visibly affected, or even damaged them.
- The angle where it shows under The Empire State Building is the same angle used in the collapse of the building in the 200 years segment of Heavy Metal/the main documentary (in the look up view).
- The meteor is the only extinction that made a brief cameo in the series, that being in the episode Bound and Buried, intro or 4 months segment.
