Lascaux II is the replica of the original Lascaux Cave located about 660 ft (200 m) away from the original cave. It is an attempt to present an impression of the paintings' scale and composition for the public without harming the originals. The paintings for this site were duplicated with the same type of materials such as iron oxide, charcoal and ochre which were believed to be used 19 thousand years ago.[1]
Coverage[]
Lascaux II is briefly featured in Bound and Buried, within the timeline of 10 years after people.
In a twist, the show trick the viewers into thinking that Lascaux is falling apart from decay and flake before answering that it is not an original cave. It then explains that the replica was built after it was damage cause by the heat of the visitors on Lascaux. it was open in 1983 for tourist and they called it Lascaux II.
Paul Bahn explains that Lascaux II was made in an old quarry very close to Lascaux, and he thinks that it will be disintegrating quite markedly with no hope whatsoever. Thus after 10 years, the steel and plaster construction falls apart, the walls flakes, and the replica is destroy. Ironically, the replica made by modern man can't outlast the creation of the prehistoric man's original cave.
