History (formerly The History Channel from 1995 to 2008; stylized as HISTORY) is an American pay television network and flagship channel owned by A&E Networks, a joint venture between Hearst Communications and the Disney General Entertainment Content division of the Walt Disney Company.[1]
History[]
Originally named The History Channel, it was launched in January 15, 1995 and its UK counterpart on November 1, 1995. It was launched after A&E plans for a separate history channel in early 1993 and a new production unit was established in June of that year, it was expected to be less than $100 million that cost USA Networks to launch the Sci-Fi Channel. It then follows by acquiring a documentary library from Lou Reda Productions and long-term rights for a substantial archive of documentaries from Hearst Entertainment in preparation for the launch.[2]
The History Channel led A&E's international expansion which started in April of 1996 with Brazil through a deal with TVA, Nordic and Baltic regions of Europe in 1997 through an agreement with Modern Times Group, and later in the same year, Canada.[2]
On February 16, 2008, the logo was changed on the US network as part of a rebranding effort and on March 20, 2008, The History Channel dropped "The" and "Channel" from its name to become simply "History".[3]
