The High Line is an abandoned 1.45 mile (2.33 km) section of the former elevated freight railroad of the West Side Line, along the lower west side of New York City borough of Manhattan between 34th Street near the Javits Convention Center and Gansevoort Street in the West Village. The High Line was built in the early 1930s by the New York Central and has been unused by freight service since 1980. It is in a state of disrepair, although the elevated structure is basically sound. Wild grass and plants grow along most of the route.[1]

Coverage[]

The High Line was briefly featured in Heavy Metal in the segment timeline of 30 years after people. The show featured the history of the High Line and the future of plants in New York City. The High Line runs for 22 blocks along Manhattan's west side when it was completed in 1934. It allows trains to pick-ups and delivers supplies directly inside the warehouses and factories from meat packing district to Hell's Kitchen. The rail traffic suddenly decline in the 1950s and the last trains rumble this line in 1980 when cargo was more transported by trucks.

Steven S. Ross commented in the segment saying that the High Line was a steel structure located in Manhattan except nobody notice nor walked on the train line which allows wildlife and plants of the city to colonize. This occurrence allows Life After People to gain proof that the city will be quickly colonize by nature quickly without people.

Trivia[]

  • The High Line was later converted into a city park in June 8, 2009, only less than a month after the episode first aired.
