Cockroaches (or roaches) are a paraphyletic group of insects belonging to Blattodea, containing all members of the group except termites. About 30 cockroach species out of 4,600 are associated with human habitats. Some species are well-known as pests. They are common and hardy insects capable of tolerating a wide range of climates, from Arctic cold to tropical heat. Tropical cockroaches are often much larger than temperate species.[1]

Cockroaches were featured in the documentary in 25 years after people.

The disappearance of humans forced a change in habits of cockroaches. David Brin thinks that the cockroach would mourn after they gorge the surplus after human disappeared. While cockroaches thrived on scraps, they can eat book bindings, cardboard, and any rotting organic matter like dead leaves and roots, but food isn't a problem, roaches need warmth, the kind that humans always supplied through artificial heat. Cockroaches started as a tropical species and some experts say that cockroaches couldn't survive winter in colder cities. John Hadidian stated that Cockroaches are extremely adaptable and been around for 300 million years.

While the first winter witness the die-off of some cockroaches, many more moved underground to find warmth until milder temperatures returned. Cockroaches enjoys the golden age and survives in abandoned downtown devoid of insecticides, overrun by vegetation, and rising water table.
