Coverage[]
The Atlantic City Boardwalk is featured in Sin City Meltdown.
It was introduced in 2 days after people when the only creatures strolling down the boardwalk are feral cats, where the future of 140 felines is uncertain. The boardwalk itself might beat the odds and the show gave information that it was originally built in 1870, making Atlantic City the first beachside boardwalk in the United States, made of 216,000 planks of wood and runs for over 4 miles. The earliest boardwalk was made of cedar, a wood that so fragile that it was dismantled and put into storage every winter to keep it out of the elements. The modern boardwalk is much tougher, where many of the sections were replaced with South American hardwood called ipe or Brazilian walnut beginning in 1990. It's naturally resistant to insects, rot, and mold, and can have a same fire-rating as concrete due to being one of the world's densest wood. One example is a fire in June of 2007 when the fire started under the boardwalk tore through local businesses, destroying sections of the boardwalk made of pine and the hardwood wasn't damaged.
Its fate is revealed in 50 years after people when a hurricane is on its way up the coast towards Atlantic City. Sand has buried much of the boardwalk after 50 years but the exposed sections will be buffeted by the wind. The corroded metal tie-downs weaken as the winds increase and a whole sections of the boardwalk are ready to give way. John Feairheller stated that the portions of the boardwalk will break up and become battering rams. As it turns into a battering ram, some of the sections crashes into the buildings behind.
